A fellow miles enthusiast and friend, Ray, tipped me off earlier this week that OfficeMax is running a special promotion for this week (ends the end of tomorrow, Sept 8th) where you receive $10 off every two (2) $50 Visa or Mastercard prepaid gift cards that you purchase. Since each card has a $4.95 activation fee, this essentially just cancels the activation fee for the two cards (and you make a shiny dime).
Now, this might not seem like a deal off the bat. But if you are a Chase Ink Bold/Classic/Plus cardholder, remember you earn 5x points for purchases at office supply stores, including OfficeMax. That means that the $100 you spend in total for the two gift cards equates to 500 points! Best of all, your points earned on your Ink product are Ultimate Rewards points, which means they transfer on a 1:1 ratio with many major airlines and hotel programs, including United Airlines. So essentially you’re getting those 500 miles for absolutely free! You can use the gift cards to pay off other purchases later on.
If you are a true miles enthusiast and want to take advantage of this deal, it should be particularly noted that there is no limit on this promotion per customer! The only restriction is that in order to get the $10 off, you must purchase $50 Visa or Mastercard gift cards (cannot be AMEX or anything else or in an amount other than $50), AND they must be purchased in pairs.
So essentially, if you’re not already doing Vanilla Reloads or your local OfficeMax is out of Vanilla Reloads, this is a great way to score potentially thousands of points at once by purchasing enough gift cards to pay off your other purchases for the month. All you have to do is politely ask the cashier to scan the coupon (which is located at their register) once for each pair of cards you have. If you purchased 60 of these prepaid cards (and had the coupon scanned 30 times), then you would be purchasing $3,000 worth of prepaid cards at $2,997.00 (you save $3 total from the coupon because 60 cards * $0.05 profit = $3)! Not only do you completely cancel the activation fee, you make $3 bucks (ok, that won’t buy you much of anything). More importantly though, you are making 14,985 points/miles in exchange for your boldness.
To get in on this promotional offer, you can just go to your local OfficeMax by the end of Saturday, September 8, 2012. There is no coupon to print out; the cashier has the coupon barcode at the register. Remember it has to be in pairs of $50 Visa or Mastercard gift cards to get in on this promotion.
To double check the existence of this promotion, you can just look at the weekly ad at officemax.com. Click on Weekly Ad at the top right corner, then search “gift card” in the search field for the advertisement. It will pop up with the $10 off 2 $50 Visa/Mastercard offer. I’ve attached a screenshot below (click it for the full size version):
If you are making a large purchase in gift cards, be prepared to go through some extra verification with your credit card as prepaid/giftcards are essentially cash. You also should call ahead with your credit card company to alert them that you are going to be making a large purchase for the amount of approximately XYZ (fill in the amount) at OfficeMax, to avoid potential complications later on.
