The United MileagePlus Shopping Portal, which is free for anyone to join, is a great way to earn bonus United Airline miles on your everyday shopping. Now until January 20, 2013, the MileagePlus Shopping Portal is offering a 500 bonus United Miles credit for any purchase of $100 or more at any of their online portal retailers.

The fine print says that this promotion is only available to those who received an email about this, but my experience with these promotions are that sometimes they’ll still credit you. Of course, it’s up to you if you want to take that risk. If you’re planning on making a big purchase at any of the select retailers anyway, go through the shopping portal and you might find yourself with an extra 500 bonus miles.

Each United MileagePlus account is limited to a maximum of 500 bonus miles from this promotion, no matter how many MileagePlus shopping accounts you have or how many purchases you make. Miles post in 8 to 10 weeks.

If you don’t have plans on spending $100 but want to get in on the extra miles, consider just buying gift card(s) online to your favorite merchants. I value 500 United Miles at roughly $10.
